A free software project initiated by Richard Stallman in 1983 to create a Unix-like operating system composed entirely of free software. The name stands for “GNU’s Not Unix!” and emphasizes compatibility with Unix while being developed independently. GNU is widely used with the Linux kernel to form GNU/Linux systems.
